My Camel Tribe Experience in Sharm El Sheikh Print E-mail
Written by Marco Daturi

Na'ama Bay is the most popular and well-known area of Sharm El Sheikh and the most frequented by tourists looking to relax, thanks to the presence of a great number of bars, clubs, and very good restaurants with a refined cuisine for all tastes. Among them ' Pomodoro' is really worth a very special mention for its excellence as well as 'Tandoori' for its very fine ethnic character.

Pomodoro Restaurant, probably the best in Sharm El Sheikh.
As italian I can confirm that food is super!

The very special Tandoori indian restaurant

The heart of Sharm is also the place where scuba diving was born in the '80s, when this area was still a desert. Now, over 20 years later, it is very active and many new centers have sprung up following the first pioneers. We are particularly glad to go back to the 'Camel Dive Club & Hotel', a diving center that doesn't need any presentation with over two decades of activity always in search of excellence for its own customers: here we'll spend a perfect week of relaxation and scuba diving.
Several guides are waiting for us at the desk of the diving center to check us in, to verify our equipment and to plan the week according to our demands and expectations.
We agree to meet at 8.00 a.m. and our equipment is ready and transferred by the members of the staff of Camel. After a short walk to the port of Na'ama, our boat is waiting for us for a full day in this splendid Red Sea.

A boat for daily dives.

The boat is comfortable and the crew, kind and helpful, so we have a very pleasant time at sea.
In addition to the local dives you can quickly reach 'classical destinations' such as Tiran and Ras Mohamed in an hour by boat and longer transfers are planned only for the two wrecks, Dunraven and Thistlegorm.
All dives are always preceded by briefings both to explain the diving procedures and to describe the dives that will follow. Fortunately both the group and the guide are Italian so it is easy to understand and to follow their instructions.
A good lunch on board is most welcome: a typical buffet meal is prepared at the center of the room that can comfortably accommodate about ten scuba divers. The boats are very comfortable and - unlike many other operators - divers are not crammed in big groups neither on the boat nor even less in the water.
After lunch some relaxation, a very short nap and if you like it's time for your third dive.

Relax and dive!

Tanks are always ready!

At about 4 p.m. we go back to the base without needing to worry about our own equipment that is looked after by the staff members. Thus we can relax on the sofas of the diving center and this is the time when we chat with other scuba divers just back from different boats. And here we handle logbooks, magazines, cameras and computers, to store the pleasant records of the new adventures just experienced.
At Camel the very pleasant atmosphere is international because in addition to our Italian friends we meet divers of different nationalities, mainly English, German and people from other European countries and we generally start a cultural exchange in a very friendly atmosphere: it may be for the nitrogen, the environment or the vacation, but some of these people really seem old friends and with them we soon establish a good relationship and get organized for dinners and evenings together.

The Camel bar is the best place for spending the surface interval after diving.

The time for a shower, some privacy and at about 6 p.m. it is customary to meet at the Camel Bar for a beer and peanuts with our friends. Our life in Sharm gravitates around the diving center: in a range of one hundred meters we have all we need, including our room at the Camel Hotel where we go back to rest and get ready for a new day of bubbles.

Suggestions

  • All dives in Sharm El Sheikh have particular and beautiful features. Surely Tiran and Ras Mohamed must be visited but we also recommend one day at Thistlegorm, that you cannot miss if you like wrecks.

  • There are many diving centers in the Red Sea but to enjoy your vacation it's advisable to choose one authorized by the CDWS. We have no hesitation in recommending the Camel Dive Club & Hotel to all divers; they really deserve full marks and a first class degree cum laude.

  • Sharm is rich with excellent restaurants but you must pay attention to the quality of the service. Excellent in many places, we recommend Pomodoro for the very good cuisine, Tandoori for an Indian dinner and El Masrin in Old Sharm for a more simple, traditional dinner based on meat.

  • Excursions are numerous, and the desert is the most fascinating call. Recommended in the period from October up to April, then it becomes too hot. We also recommend a trip to Dahab, distant 100 kms from Sharm.

  • For your shopping there are a lot of places where you can buy souvenirs of every kind. You can always bargain with shopkeepers.
